I suspect that it is possible to distinguish AS-L from As-R from a photo of the back, but it can't possibly do so unless the end woven first is known. It must be possible to do this from a photo of the back, too. The reason As-L can't be distinguished from As-R without that information is that they are designated by convention as open to the right or to the left as seen from the weaver's position.
I'd be interested in knowing how your friend does it. Not that I doubt his claim, but because I'd like to be able to do it myself.
