  • Old rug question

I've enjoyed this rug for about forty years but never learned where it was made or what is it should be called. I'm hoping someone can provide that info. It is 29" x 23" and the top surface has a very soft feeling. 1st photo is the back, 2nd is the top.
    Thanks

My guess is that this is Northwest Persian, possibly Kurdish, and is a bag face. Perhaps early 20th century?

    Best wishes,

    John

      That's my guess as well.

I’m not sure it’s a bag face. The size is off. It appears to have been reduced in size on all sides and is possible it’s missing the (as pictured, bottom pic, far right motif) the top triangle type motif from the bottom. Whatever it is, it’s a nice piece.

Here is a piece that is similar to include the size which is a few inches longer and wider listed as an Afshar bag face 19c.

(lately I’ve been having a difficult time posting pics. I will come back later to post of pic of the bag k found)

Thanks for the replies. I just looked at many photos of afshar bagfaces and many are similar in size to mine, and have the extended pattern on one end. Based on that, I don't think mine was ever educed in size. The attached photo is one most like mine and it also has the four gulls.

Ironically I was trying to post the same picture. The owner of the Afshar is in Illinois and although we only chatted via emails recently, he appears to be a good soul and has an amazing collection.

I found that afshar bagface rug for sale at https://thepersianknot.com/afshar-bagface-1294/. Here is another small, excellent condition, Persian rug I've owned for about fifty years. It is about 24" x 30" and has the old Made in Persia tag on the back. but only a few hand written numbers are barely visible. I'm hoping someone can identify this one.

This is another of the rugs I've owned for decades. It is in great condition and I would appreciate any info about it. It is 24"x 35".

The edge of the carpet under my foot in the previous photos is an old, approx. 9x12, Ivory ground Kabutarahang. I got it from the estate of Irelands ambassador to the US. It was in his dinning room and had small slit in one end, for a foot operated bell pull where the master would sit, to silently summon the staff. I had it repaired years ago and it is in excellent condition.

I also have, what I believe is a very old Chi Chi Kabistan. I'd appreciate any info on this old carpet.

I have more beautiful rugs that I've collected over many years and none are for sale. I just wanted to share my collection and learn some info about some of them.

                            Hi Henry

I think you'll get more commentary if you post your rugs in small groups of related pieces. The comments will certainly be easier to follow.
