  • Hamadan?

Can anyone help identify this rug? It measures 120 x 200 cm. It has a garden pattern in the main field and a Serabend border. I think it might be from western Persia, the Hamadan region.

    Heinz,

I agree; most likely a Hamadan. Dealers will sometimes attribute these somewhat finer single-wefted rugs to Malayer, with the finest among them labeled Mishan Malayers. In any case these two districts are not far apart and the rugs they made are often indistinguishable.

Thank you, Joseph! Is it acceptable to assume the first quarter of the 20th century as the time of origin?

        Heinz,

You are welcome. As for the date, I am far from being an expert but am guessing that the rug could have been made anytime from around 1910 to the early 1930s, which overlaps your proposed date range. I think Cecil Edwards' book on Persian rugs (which I no longer have) is one of the best references for attributing and dating these Persian export rugs.

BTW, I once owned a long runner with a similar field design and wool warps, possibly dating slightly earlier (c1900-10), that I thought could have been from Eastern Kurdistan.

            Heinz,

I agree Hamadan, and maybe local to the area around Enjilas. I've seen that border on Enjilas rugs, although they're much more common on Marasali rugs from the Caucasus.

            Regards
            Chuck

              Chuck,

Thank you for the information about the Enjilas carpets. That seems very plausible to me. Until now, I only knew this border from Serabend carpets. The rug‘s origin in the province of Hamadan can then be considered certain.

              Regards,
              Heinz
