Nice rug! This is just a guess, but it reminds me of some Malayer rugs I have seen.

      Hi

Looking at thr back, I'd consider Heriz as a strong possibility.

      Regards
      Chuck

          Hi all,

Like Erik, I’m also going to guess Western Iran/Hamadan province for this nice rug; possibly a Malayer with two weft shots between each row of knots rather than the more typical single-wefted variety. Looking at the back, the warps appear to be partly depressed, and I think the knots are probably symmetrical. That said, I can see why Chuck thinks it could be a Heriz but the design and format don’t really seem to fit, IMO. I’ve seen similar field designs on rugs described as Farahan-Sarouk and I once owned a small Bijar rug with the same minor border. However, the knot density and structure are very different from the present piece. In any case, I’m far from an expert and recommend checking out Cecil Edwards’ Persian Carpets book (which I no longer have) as a good reference.

With some help from my friends now am leaning towards Farahan Sarouk type. Have a look at these two images almost identical. This the the last Emperor of Russia's daybed in his working cabinet. The daybed was covered by Farahan Sarouk. The color photo is a modern reconstruction.

If the knot used is asymmetrical (most likely) it is from the Feraghan region
