Tchelaberd (Kars?)

Hi everybody, what do you think about this item? Could it be a real caucasian (new?) Tchelaberd or a Kars Kazakh? Size, 154 x 241 cm. Thank you.

I'm a bit confused about your attribution (Kafkas from Türkiye). In English, that translates to "Caucasian from Turkey". While part the Caucasus (Armenia) abuts Turkey, none of it is within the borders of Turkey and Armenia is only one part of the Caucasus. Can you elaborate, please?

That's definitely a rather recent piece, and I agree that it looks like a modern reproductions coming out of Turkey - that slightly sculpted look around the edges of the major motifs are common in Turkish work as well as Egyptian. It is possible that it's a modern weaving from somewhere in the Caucasus, but unlikely that it has any connection with traditional weaving areas. It does not have the contrived abrash of Afghan and Pakistani "chobi" rugs, and the palette and structure (this one appears to have fully depressed warps) isn't really right for traditional Causcasian products.

It is a handsome piece regardless.

It looks like a Kars rug to me. “Possibly” within the last 20-40 years although I will do some research. It’s a very nice rug!

Kars is a city in Turkey. Among other things they are the source of rugs that have a lot in common with Kazaks and are often referred to as Kars Kazaks. That's a marketplace term that helps to identify the rugs; I've never heard of "Caucasian Kars" and since Kars is in Turkey (the Caucasus includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Daghestan and Georgia) a Kars Kazak isn't a Caucasian rug. One possibility is that Caucasian Kars is simply a manufacturer designation for a line of production.

Rugdom is confusing enough without adding more.
