Konstantin,
Historically, these rugs were woven in Herat in west Afghanistan and are referred to as Saruq, after the tribal group that manufactures them. It is a different population than the Saryk who settled along the Amu Darya river. Most of the "older" pieces (1940's to 1960's were made with ivory wool warps. Some weavers have returned to that tradition. After the Russians came through, many in the west relocated to Iran or Turkmenistan; some returned years after that war ended.
Regards
Chuck

Thank you Chuk. I was always sure that Saryk and Sarug is just different spelling of the same tribe. From what i see on the pictures it has some age. My guess 1950-1960. Maybe a notch later - 1970. Am personally would prefer indigo field, not black/ But we have what we have and the colors blend nicely. I was surprised it did not attract ANY interest at the auction. Very balanced and proportional an all respectsOriginally posted by Chuck Wagner View PostKonstantin,
