  • Armitsar rug

Could not resist buying this Armitsar Indian rug at German auction. So several questions. This looks like old persian design for me. Is this right? There are lots of areas with nice abrash. But I do not think this is possible in commercial mass production. Is this just the design element made by purpose? Click image for larger version

    Hi Konstantin,

We have very few members who have ever posted rugs from India beyond a couple modern copies of old rugs. There have been a few discussion threads on Mughal rugs which are still in our archives.

Your piece has the style of an older Bijar rug, but not the palette. I can't judge whether it's new or old, but I will say that is a very attractive rug.

I'm not that I can add much to this other than to note that there are modern rugs that have an appearance very similar to older rugs, Luribaft, in particular (in Farsi, the work of the Lor) These are Afghan rugs made using natural dyes and using designs based on older pieces, not unlike the new gabbehs made by Zollanvari & Opie.

An example currently on the market, just for visual impression:

    Regards
    Chuck
