  • Turkmen Bag Face ID/Age?

Hi all -- beyond the fact that this is Turkmen and probably old-ish, I know very little about this bag face. I would be very grateful for any ideas you have based on the motifs, construction, or other features.

    Thanks so much!

Just a follow up that I see some similarities with this Yomut chuval, though maybe it's a stretch: https://www.sellingantiques.co.uk/49...y-19th-century

      Andrew,

Is the white cotton, or wool ?

Hi Chuck -- it's wool, I believe. Here is a super closeup of some of the white, if that helps.

Also (sorry for the extra message), I realized the original pictures were in such harsh lighting that it might affect your analysis. Here is the rug in medium strength natural light.

            Andrew,

Sorry for dragging this on but would you please also post a similarly-scaled closeup of the back ?

            Regards
            Chuck

Hi. This looks like a small rug with a bagface design.

                  Hi Andrew,

This is a very unusual Turkmen piece. I would think it was a torba, but it is woven in the wrong direction. This is woven like a Baluchi balisht. And then the warp depression is a bit of a conundrum--I would think this piece like this would have no warp depression whatsoever. It's got to be old--it has good dyes; I even think that strong red is good. I would think this was from the late 19th-c. I was leaning Yomud at first, but then the images you posted where you said the color was more accurate makes me think it is from the Ersari, or someone in the Middle Amu Darya region. I am mystified, honestly, but I hope someone will ID this. I don't think it could be a Yomud woman in the Middle Amu Darya weaving a balisht.

                  Cheers, Paul

                    Hi Andrew,

Here are a few images of a superficially similar piece from our rug bunker. I think this is a Saryk piece from the middle Amu Darya region; I ran that idea past someone who outght to know, and she didn't disagree (reserving certainty because of the risks of email based rug attribution). The moderate warp depression, symmetrical knots, and cotton content are pretty good indicators.

The white on this one is mostly cotton but switches to wool (last image); I encourage you to look over all the white on yours (in your image above, wool for sure).

My sense is that yours may be Saryk as well.

                    Regards
                    Chuck

Thank you so much, everyone! This is way more info than I had when I started. I am also leaning Saryk based on some further sleuthing, but if anyone has additional insights to share, I'd be very grateful. This is my first bag face, and I'm excited that I seem to have stumbled into something both unusual and genuinely old.

                        Hi Andrew,

Congratulations for your find! I too think it is a Turkmen Torba, though was not so knowledgable to discern exacly that it was Saryk. Just in case you might be interested to compare I like to show you my small Ersari Torba, so to distinguish the different pattern. This is a circa 1900 Torba. Thank you.
