  • Turkmen Saryk Khorjiin

Hello, I got a new Khorjiin today. It‘s a Turkmen Khorjiin from the Saryk tribe. Size is 104 x 47cm. The bags alone are 47 x 44cm. It‘s a wonderful fine weaving with really nice colours. The brown pile on the photos has been an aubergine colour. Deep inside the pile you can see the original colour. The sun has burned it away. Tomorrow it will get a smooth handwash. The pictures from inside the bags show the original colours.
There is an old seal on it. GAD BROS. What do you think about it? Is this a Company name of a dealer or perhaps of a collection?
Would be great to get some advices. Thank you very much,

    Greetings, Stefan

          Hi Stefan

It sure looks like a Turkmen khorjin pair, in nearly perfect condition. Why do you think it's Saryk? My best guess would be Yomud if it's symmetrically knotted, Tekke if it uses asymmetric knots; maybe even Afghan.

GAD Brothers is probably a dealership. There's a GAD dealership today; the initials stand for Great American Distributors. They deal in machine made rugs, but may be descendants of GAD Brothers.

Hello Steve, thank you for the input. I have found another example and all the signs and motifs should be from Saryk.

It looks well used and judging by the stains on the back, it is consistent with animal sweat unlike someone attempting to artificially age it (it happens). Have you dug down into the bottom of the sacks finding hay or other like substances?
The colors appear to be a combination of synthetic and natural dyes to me. It appears the synthetic dyes have faded. The dark indigo blue? that looks like a natural dye, looks outstanding as if it was made yesterday.

I am using my phone to look at the pictures and the overall size of the piece to include the locking loops are consistent with similar saddlebags from the geographical area. I would assume the loops are goat hair? I am leaning on this being a late Tekke piece from the 1st half of the 20th century but that is just a guess from what I can see. It’s a nice piece and hopefully you have a nice place to display it.

                Hello Joe,
the loops are goat hair and inside I have found a lot of dirt and abraded fine wool. I have washed it today by hand and the backside is very harsh. The dirt or sweat there is very very old and I can't bring it away. In my opinion it is a Saryk. I have found the pile motifs nowhere else and they have used for their Khordjiins the same weaved material of their big transportation bags on the camels. It's very hard and stiff, made for working....I have uploaded an old photo from a Saryk member with the big bags. When I have a look on Tekke material on rugrabbit or dealer websites, there are totally different motifs and patterns.

Keep the stains on the back. They will only enhance the piece.

Yes, thank you. The stains are not really impressed by my attempt to wash them.

                      Hi,

So, over the years there have been re-assessments of some early tribal attributions and I can't know whether this falls into that category or not.

That said, In Valentina Moshkova's book Carpets of the People of Central Asia (translatedto English by Gerge O'Bannon and Omadan Amanova-Olsen), I found he following:

I would like to see a close up image of the back side of the knotted pile bag face of your piece, to evaluate the knots & structure.

                      Regards
                      Chuck

Hello Chuck, thank you very much for this advice and your input. I have uploaded pictures and I assume, that the knots are symmetrical. Have a look....
The backside could be cotton. Greetings from Switzerland, Stefan

and some more with the backside, I think it is cotton (?)
