  • Question regards weaving direction for an AOL knot

I recently came across the below image (1) on a website showing the direction of the weaving for an asymmetric open left knot. Is that the correct direction that is shown by the green arrows?

I would have thought it was woven in the direction of the white arrows now shown at right on image 2 (next to the question mark).

    Which is correct?

Pardon my ignorance and thanks for any help

    Hi Philip

Both images show knots that are asymmetric-open left. I doubt that there's a way to know what the weaver did to get that result without being present and watching her work.

      Thanks Steve.

Realise all 'knots' shown are open left, but my question arises from thinking that, for an open left asymmetric knot, the pile thread would first go in and under the left warp (white arrows that I added in image 2) as opposed to how the green arrows show it going in, under, then over the right warp (as original diagram 1 showed). For some reason that green arrow direction just seems back to front to me for weaving an open left asymmetric knot.

But you seem to be saying that an open left asymmetric knot could be woven in either direction; weavers choice?

BTW, if its not too much trouble could you change my sign up back to the original 'Phil' please (seeing as our experiment did not work).

            Thanks very much Chuck!

Now although my above question re knot weaving direction remains unanswered, I assume () then that I am safe to assume that it is the weavers choice which way she weaves ANY knot (be it an S, ASL or ASR knot). That is she can start from the left OR right of the rug whatever type knot she is weaving, her choice?

And thanks for the change back Steve, although I had thought that would reinstate my previous account, not just follow on from the new one just started. Sorry, if I had known that was the case I would not have bothered you with asking to 'change back'.
