I recently bought these kilims, provenance being Afghanistan. However I'm trying to really break down the carpet, I understand it is a newer production but where exactly could it be from Afghanistan. I seem to see the influences of Taimani Aimaq (from Farah) production. What do you guys think?

    Hi Amna,

Tribal distinctions in Baluch-group weaving ares sometimes difficult to decode even in antique pieces, but after 1920, as the work moves away from tents/homes into workshops it becomes increasingly difficult to sort out. Even when a piece has a border that would make me think "Timuri" (or whatever) in an old piece might just be what the workshop owner put in the cartoon for the weavers to copy. With recent work like this, you'd have to know the individual workshops to sort it out. I see no traditional iconography in these pieces, and I can't see the weave close enough to get any information from it. Are you sure these are kilims? They sure seem to me to be pile carpets with kilim ends, as is traditional in Baluch-group weaving, but again, we can only see them from a distance.

    Paul
