  • Chichi? And the writing?

    Dear all,
we have inherited this beautiful carpet. It should be around 80 years old. After looking in many books I cannot tell where it is from. I recognise a Chichi border and some elements of the Kuba's area, but the rest of the carpet doesn't look like that very much. Somebody in the family said it was Tajik. Also what are these black fringes?

Moreover, there is something written. Is it a date? There is also another one, but it is really hard to read it.

    Thank you for any help,

    Hi

Welcome to Turkotek. First, a little formality. We don't permit posters to use anything except their real names as user names, although newcomers hardly ever know that (it's in the paragraph atop this page). Please send me (steven.price@vcuhealth.org) your real name. I'll edit your profile and make it your user name. Thanks.

I'm confused a bit by your rug. The first photo doesn't have the same borders on each side, but later photos do. I agree that the border looks like a design from the Caucasus, but the rug looks to almost certainly be from someplace in Central Asia. Your estimate that it's 80 years old seems about right. The black fringes are the ends of the warps. The inscription is illegible (to me), but doesn't look like a date.

    Regards,

    Steve Price

      Thank you Steven,
I just wrote an email to you.

Also thank you about your analysis of the carpet. The first photo is probably a little cropped but yes the two long sides are the same as well as the two short ones. Does the fact that there are two inscriptions mean this is from a city?

        Hi Alessandro

Neither inscription looks like a date to me. I don't think it tells us anything at all.

The writing looks Armenian to me.

            Hi,

It looks like 1911, in Devanagari script. Hindu rug weavers in Central Asia ? That would be new.

            Regards
            Chuck

Possibly Pakistani? Almost 10% of the population is Hindu. And, according to Google, Pakistani rugs often used "Bokhara" models.

May guess based on the symbols is that the images are letters very similar to Farsi and not numerals. We would need much better pics of the front and back though.

Very likely so. Black fringes confirm that
