  • shahsavan pile bagface?

Here is an interesting piece I know nothing about. The closest similar bag I could find is 19c shahsavan pile bagface pieces. This piece measure 16.5” x 17.5”

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

Also it’s not a pile front as mentioned in the title. It’s a flatweave.

    Hi Joe,

To me it looks like a fairly recent production made in the style of a Shah Savan bag. Hard to know where it might have been made.

    Regards,

    James

Thanks James. I was unaware they made copies out there. I guess it may be a tourist thing? Either way, I like the piece and hopefully can confirm if it’s old or not. Monetary amounts are not important to me but the age, origin and history are.

I reexamined this piece today under a careful eye. It appears most of the colors have faded compared to the backside. The likely culprit would be synthetic dye although the indigo blue looks natural. The brown colors were actually various shades of red. The interesting find was the white border surrounding the main motif or what some call a turtle. The white border is silk, or a mixture of silk and wool. It’s hard to tell but I cannot see or feel any wool.
The composition is unlike a traditional “clean and sharp” design of a Shahsavan example. It’s possible it came from a weaver in training? I guess we will never know for sure. All thoughts and comments appreciated. Size is 16.5”x 17.5”.

          Hi Joe,

Well, someone, has been busy over the past 45 years or so, making Shahsevan-like material. Whether they are actually made by Shahsevan, or by Afghans, Chinese, or Turks using Shahsevan motifs is beyond me. They're usually described as "vintage". I bought one that had colors that seemed reasonable and was nicely finished, but I don't believe it is any older than 1950. There are a few out on the web at any time. Here's one someone posted on Catawiki:
