: Dear Marla,

: Your comment about the absence of supplementary discontinuous wefts to compensate for the space taken up by the pile decorating the flatwoven white stripes in the "ak mafrash" caught my attention, too. I think the pattern of the pile compensates all by itself; many other designs wouldn't (but note that Marvin's khorjin uses excactly the same design, in an all-pile structure).

: What I mean by "compensates all by itself" is that the pattern is basically a zig-zag, so the number of knots on every warp is the same, or nearly so. If it weren't, the wefts could not remain horizontal.

: Is that right? Do I actually grasp some element of textile structure? Say it's so, Marla!

: Regards,

: Steve Price

Very astute, Steve! Absolutely correct! The problem on the ak chuval elem that I've illustrated is that the much more complex design isn't limited to simple zig-zagging.
