I'm sure you're right in saying that we overstate the seriousness with which religious strictures are taken by people of cultures other than our own. Being of the Judeo-Christian tradition, I'd probably be amused if I heard people from some other culture say that various (relatively commonplace) activities don't occur in my society because they are forbidden by our religion. In fact, one might make a case for the notion that there are no religious restrictions on any activity that people don't do often enough for it to be noticed. There's no commandment against eating rocks!
