  • A small Qaracha runner

    (Original post edited with incorrect information)

    Here is a little Qaracha or commonly known as “Qaraçı” or in English, “Karaja” runner we picked up some years ago and I just finished analyzing and adding it to the inventory book. Instead of labeling a piece “Turkish” or “Persian” for example, I make all attempts to dig deeper.
    For this piece, here is a breakdown with generic terms used by many starting from the basic descriptions;

    -Oriental rug
    -Persian
    -Northern Iran
    -Caucasian Region
    -Grouped to the Qashqai Federation
    -Woven by the Qaracha tribe
    -Time period of production

    Looking over the piece I just assumed the knots at first were asymmetrical and was surprised to find they were actually symmetrical. Of course this would be consistent with a piece from the Caucasian region.
    Another surprise was the number of different dye colors used. I counted a total of 14. I believe the dyes are a mixture of natural and synthetic. The knot count is consistent with pieces from the tribe and region;

    KPSI 84
    KPSD 1302
    1 cm sq. 13

    The size is;
    73.5 x 23.5 inches
    187 x 72 cm

    Construction;
    Wool on cotton
    white/grey wefts

    Age;
    I believe this is from a period between 1970-1990.
