The Range of Afshar Weaving

Dear folks -

Michael Wendorf commented in the Show and Tell thread on the December 7, 2002, rug morning by Ed Zimmerman and Michael Seidman, that they had, among other things, presented one of the nicest arrays of Afshar pieces he had seen for some time.

This made me wonder whether someone might not do a salon suggesting something about the range of Afshar weaving, which is considerable.

I looked by chance tonight at Julian Homer's little "Truly Tribal" catalog and could supply eight nice Afshar examples not often seen to anyone who decides to undertake this salon idea.

And just to follow Steve's point, Austin Doyle, the current president of the Washington, DC area club recently designed and hosted a "salon" (read "smaller, focused") meeting of club members on the subject of Afshar weaving.

He would also be a possible resource should you be interested in attempting something here on Turkotek.

Thanks, John.

I would be interested in such a Salon, but not the right person to develop it.

Since I don't know enough about the field and don't have ready access to enough resources, it would take me more time than I have available to do a half-decent job. I think that Jack has already made a good start on this in the other thread...

Dear John,

I am interested to participate to this forum as I am specializing in tribal rugs but would already like to hold your attention to the fact that among the 8 Homer pieces attributed to Afshar, 2 are seemingly not Afshar:

- The saddle-bag on plate 18 seems rather Kurdish to me.
- The rug on plate 36 is also to be avoided as it seems to be a clear Khamseh.
